Better than I expected

Better than I expected
I was pleased when this arrived and discovered that it must be a newer version of the 3100 model. The one pictured and described on Amazon.com and even the Equus Innova websites is the 3100c. The one I received is the 3100a which has some of the features of the 3110 such as the larger display with onscreen definitions and instructions and the ability to display freeze frame data. You can also search the code library on the device. Thanks to Amazon.com for offering this for a reasonable price(it was $41 less than what I found at a local auto parts store). The product has worked well so far in showing me why my vehicle wasn't "READY" for the annual emissions test. I had disconnected my battery while servicing the vehicle a little over a week before the test and felt confident that I had driven enough during that time for all the readiness monitors to be satisfied. After using this tool I discovered that none of the monitors were detected. This was due to the fact that I have a Superchips custom tuning device that must have somehow disabled the monitors. After returning to the stock tuning the monitors were displayed and I did a drive cycle and watched as they were satisfied. The software and usb cable included with the tool allow you to import the data saved in memory and view, save and print out a report. You can also upgrade the firmware of the tool if needed. The only CON that I noticed and this is a very minor one is the lack of a backlight for the display.

I bought this On Board Diagnostic meter right after purchasing my first car, and it is completely worth the money. This meter is really easy to use, and I have put it to some heavy use. With this meter you can view the reason your check engine light is on, see potential problems, and monitor and reset your drive cycle checks to pass inspection.

If you have ever taken your car to a mechanic only to be hit with some jargon and then handed a bill for way more than you expected then I would recommend this. The meter obviously is not a magic 8 ball, but if you know a general idea of the problem area then you can watch out for any tricks when you have it worked on. You can also use the meter to see if your car has tripped any diagnostic warnings that will not necessarily cause your check engine light to come on.

Finally I used this meter to reset my drive cycle tests and clear up a hung check engine light, a good move before you take it and pay for the inspection. The uses of this meter are endless; I have friends, family, and neighbors coming over to borrow it all the time. This meter plus a little Google magic will also really get you started with some do-it-yourself repairs. Fantastic product, not the top of the line but super adequate for the average Joe car enthusiast.

Check engine light came on wife's car. Took it to a local mechanic and had it diagnosed and repaired for under $200. He did nothing other than clear the code and told the wife to tighten the gas cap on her next fill up. Within a few days the check engine light came back on again, so the money paid to the mechanic was for nothing. Surfing the web sites I found others had problems and spend much money on their mechanics who were incompetent in resolving OBD2 error messages.

At this point I decided to fix it myself and purchased the Innova 3100. I know nothing about error codes but with the help from Innova technical support, the internet newsgroup, various repair websites, the Haynes repair manual and youtube, I was able to fix the problem. I was also able to pinpoint and fix the problem on my son's car as well when his check engine light came on. How cool is this?

Wow, the 3100 is a very nice unit, money this time very well spend. Couldn't do without it now. I must also add the Innova tech was extremely helpful, welling to spend as much time as needed on the phone to resolve any questions I had and going through troubleshooting procedures with me as well. BTW, you get a real knowledgeable English-speaking technician from Innova, not someone from India with a heavy English accent.

I am not a huge do-it-yourselfer but it always drives me nuts when I have something come up that I know is small and I can't handle it myself.

I recently bought a car that has tire inflation monitoring. I noticed each time it rained, my indicator lights were coming on. I didn't know at the time why or what the problem was. So I went to a mechanic, paid $52.00 and had them look at it. It turned out one tire was 7lbs lower than the others. Once I started driving , the air would expand and it would stabilize but it just so happened that the mornings when it rained, it was colder. So the colder it got the more the problem was exacerbatedl. It was humiliating to have the mechanic tell me it was the tire monitoring system b/c I didn't know that the feature even existed.

When I saw the reader they used, I decided to buy one. They are pretty cheap after all and I figured as high tech as the family's cars are, sensor lights were certain to come on at some point in the future (and the trend isn't going to change).

I got the 3100 and decided to see what I could learn. It was very easy to use and since they have a pretty good schematic about the port you plug into- i found it in about 20 seconds. (I did have to physically look under my dash b/c of where it's located on my car, I couldn't just feel around, but that's the car's issue not the reader). Anyway, like I said b/c of the diagrams, I knew exactly what to look for and it took just a few seconds.

After that, I ran it even though I had no warnings and all was just as I expected. On a scale of 1-10, the whole thing was a 1. So I offered to run it for two co-workers that had lights on. In each case, I was able to immediately find the prong and hook it up and get readings in under 30 seconds.

I each case, I was able to use the manual and figure out what the problem was. ANother reviewer mentioned that you need to be careful not to misplace the manual - I totally agree. As easy as it is to use, there are tons of features and without the manual, you're going to forget most of them unless you use the thing regularly. Since I'm a layman, I won't be using it daily and although I've memorized the basics, anything more sophisticated probably reqquires the manual or having previously done it.

Additionally, there's a software dc included and a USB cable to use in conjunction with a home computer. It's probably best to install this on a laptop so you can take it with you on the go if you need to..

All in all I think it's a great product, and for the money the features you get are excellent. I doubt you'll be disappointed.
