I've had this for almost 20 years, before smartphones, and YouTube at a local auto parts store to read and clear codes on early OBD2 subaru and honda vehicles. $50 was a lot of $ to spend. Boy did it pay off.Just used the same scanner to read and clear I code in a 2015 Chevy Volt, related to a code specific to the charging system. Now considering replacing it with a tool that provides live sensor data to troubleshoot expected sensor failures that are out of range, only considering Actron products and highly recommended this reliable example of a ground breaking consumer product that's still produced.

My dodge ram 2500 check engine light had been on for a long, long time. My local muffler guy said it was probably the cat converter and he would fix me up for $300, the dealer wanted $1000. Now that seemed like a bargain but it was still a big chunk of change so I decided to look for a cheap code reader, I found the Actron CP9125 on Amazon and it had great reviews, it was also cheap enough so I went for it! I was hoping I could figure this thing out (not having a clue as to what to expect), I quickly read the directions, (just a novice at car stuff) then I plugged it in and voila, it showed codes P0440 and P0442....an evaporator emissions malfunction/small leak. With help from my pal I locate the evaporator cannister or whatever it's called under the truck and discovered a hose was cracked on one end and not connected on the other end! I run to my local autozone and pick up a foot of hose and 2 new clamps for about $4.50, button it all up, run the scanner to clear codes and I'm all done! Now I'm just your regular car owner who does the general basic maintenance (brakes, tune-ups, oil, bulbs, etc.) far from a pro. Had I let the muffler man do his thing my code would still be on and I'd be out $300! Needless to say, but if you use this scanner just 1 time you will be way ahead of the game! In a nutshell this unit worked perfectly for my needs and my pal had an issue with his 96 corolla and we got his problem fixed (egr vac line). By the way, the booklet that it comes with has all the codes and a lot of info and if you need more input you can google your particular code and you will find a fix-it flow chart or probable cause, it shouldn't be too difficult to pinpoint your issues. I highly recommend this reader!

Awesome and simple tool. I own a fairly new Mercedes diesel, and for some reason the check engine light goes on a little too frequently (well I do supply it with a fairly healthy percentage of "home brew" biodiesel). Since I'm now out of (factory) warranty, I can't seem to part with the $100/hr to have the dealer tell me if it's a simple or difficult repair. Well, I came home from a business trip to find the check engine light (CEL) on and (this is the best part), asked my wife, when and under what condition did the light go on, and her reply (really) was, "oh, I don't look at that part if the display, well that's interesting...ok, back to this tool. It shows up, I notice, hmmmm no battery cover....instructions don't even talk about a battery....odd. Note to the manufacturer: Please state the the device is powered via the vehicle's power....so after putting the reader BACK together, I plug it into the ODB plug, and does a little boot up thingy (technical word), and states, one code, P0XXX. I look it up in their little book, and it says glow plug, cylinder #6. Cool, I can do that! So I order a replacement Bosch glow plug ($17), it's as easy as changing a spark plug....no it's even easier, because it's sitting right on the top of the engine...20 minutes later, I replug the scanner into the car, erase the code (takes all of 6 seconds), and I'm done. Considering the dealer's charge ($100 to read, and another $100 to erase it, no really that is what Mercedes charges, and don't forget the snotty attitude, that a Mercedes owner is working on their car...we KNOW what you paid for it, so we know you can afford to fix it), yes well, I happen to enjoy working on my car, it a fun and satisfying....so GREAT tool, easy to use, doesn't need a battery (NOW I know), and I made $120 on the first repair, and it only gets better from here....

Actron CP9125 Code Reader - It is a great device. I have tried it on my 1998 Montana (Pontiac) Van, my 1997 Nissan pickup truck, and my 2001 Hyundai Accent. It successfully linked with all three. I bought it for my Nissan pickup which has had a "check engine" light on for several weeks. I hooked it up, found the code, and reset the code. It has now been running for a week or more without the light coming back on. The actual code was P0510 (throttle position sensor malfunction).

I did find a descreptancy when reading the Hyundai. The instructions are to hook up the device, turn the switch to Aux, and then push the button on the scanner. When I did this I got the "no link" message. I then repeated the process but actually turned the engine on. It then read as expected.

Since then I've tried it on my uncle's 2000 Concorde successfully.

Pro's: Looks pretty rugged. So far I haven't found a vehicle it would NOT work with.

Con's: Like all such devices the cord is fairly short (it is short on most scanners).

I would recommend this device to anyone with older cars. Most of the problems annunciated with scanners are not serious problems to the user. If you don't see a drop off in mileage; if you don't feel your engine running strangely (missing, sputtering, etc); if your oil pressure light is not on; if your engine temperature is not overheating; why DO YOU CARE??? The govt may care and many states force the inspector to reject a vehicle during inspection if the check engine light is on (they don't even look at the code to see if it is emissions related; they just reject it). So having the ability to reset the check engine light is a really nice feature.
